Little Heroes Charity Announces Landmark £300,000 Investment in Life-Saving Equipment for The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children

This major investment made possible through the “Super Little Heroes Appeal”, which invited donations from our local community provides the paediatric team with a range of vital equipment needed to diagnose, treat, and care for children facing the most challenging childhood illnesses.

From the intensive care unit to the operating theatres, these advancements ensure that local children receive enhanced, world-class care.

Equipping our Heroes on the Frontline

The funding covers a wide array of specialist equipment that directly impacts the specialist care already delivered at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. A wide range of equipment has been funded for use throughout the hospital which includes:

  • Emergency Care: A Rapid Infuser (£25K), capable of delivering warmed blood at high flow rates during major trauma or complex surgeries.

  • Critical Intubation: Two new C-MAC systems (£8K) to ensure that critically ill children can be intubated safely and without delay across all hospital theatres and scanning departments.

  • Respiratory Support: Ten new Humidifiers (£21K) to replace 20-year-old technology, alongside six Airvo 3 High-Flow systems (£48K) which allow respiratory patients to remain on oxygen therapy even while being transported through the hospital.

  • Surgical Precision: Three new Gastroscopes (£90K) and four Laparoscopic sets (£28K) to facilitate minimally invasive surgeries, resulting in less pain and faster recovery for young patients along with a Blood Fridge for theatres (£4K) and a Portable Ultrasound (£10K) which helps staff to give critically ill children access to life changing and life saving drugs, quickly.

  • Training for the Future: Specialist Simulation Equipment (£2K) for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to allow junior doctors to practice life-saving procedures on high-tech mannequins before treating real patients.

  • Specialist Care: A Diagnostic Neurophysiology kit (£31K) to help monitor and treat electrical activity in the nervous system, and 2 new Dialysis Chairs (£8K) for the Renal unit to provide comfort during long treatment sessions and a Mobile Sensory Unit (£20K) for use throughout the hospital.

A Message from the Charity

“Together with our community, we are giving our doctors and nurses better tools to change lives and save lives,” said Mary McCall, CEO of Little Heroes.

“Every pound donated to the Super Little Heroes Appeal stays right here in Northern Ireland and goes directly to fund vital equipment at our only paediatric hospital. This £300,000 isn’t just a number; it represents faster diagnoses and improved treatments for children from all over this region who are cared for here at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.”

This landmark investment would not have been possible without the incredible spirit of our supporters. From the individuals who took on personal challenges and the families who shared their own stories, to the local businesses and community groups who rallied behind us—this achievement belongs to you.

To every person who donated, fundraised, or simply spread the word: thank you for your unwavering commitment. You haven’t just funded machines; you have directly invested in the health and future of children from every corner of Northern Ireland. It is your generosity that turns our vision into reality.

While this £300,000 milestone is a cause for celebration, the need for advanced equipment is constant. Little Heroes is proud to announce that the next Super Little Heroes Appeal will launch in September 2026.
