We are shining a spotlight on Niamh Stewart, a transition nurse specialist here at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children!

Niamh works as part of the Paediatric Neurodisability Team, a regional service that provides a multi-disciplinary approach to caring for children and young people with a range of conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Movement Disorders, inherited genetic disorders, and acquired brain injuries.

As part of their transition project, the team felt it was important to involve the young people and their families to ensure they are meeting the needs of their patients. With the support of the Belfast Trust PPI Team, they ran focus groups with patients and parents to hear how they can improve the transition journey as young people prepare for adulthood.

The focus groups provided a wealth of information and ensured the team was co-producing and working collaboratively with service users. To thank the young people for their time, our amazing friends at Little Heroes kindly organized a trip to the SSE Arena to watch a Giants game. This acknowledged the work they had done and was thoroughly enjoyed by all! It allowed the team to bring together young people on the same journey, and from this, many friendships have developed.

The young people have enjoyed being involved in the project so much that they have offered to stay involved, continue to offer their time and support, and work closely with the team on service improvements.

A huge thank you to Niamh and the entire Paediatric Neurodisability Team for their incredible work and to our amazing young people for being our real-life heroes!
