Talia’s Story

Talia turns five next month, she is a little girl full of personality, a sociable soul who absolutely loves music and being surrounded by people. With the loveliest nature and a knack for making everyone around her smile, Talia brings joy to every room she enters, no matter what she is facing. But while her spirit is bright, Talia’s journey began in a way we never could have imagined.

A World Turned Upside Down

The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children became our second home when Talia was just four days old. What started with a diagnosis of craniosynostosis quickly escalated. At three weeks old, she was admitted to Paul Ward with hydrocephalus, and by six weeks, she had already undergone her first brain surgery.

From that moment on, hospital life became our world.

Talia lives with a series of complex medical conditions, including epilepsy and a rare chromosome microdeletion called 1p31.3. However, it is the hydrocephalus and craniosynostosis that have shaped her path most physically. In her short life, Talia has endured more than 20 surgeries. It is a weight no child should ever have to carry, yet she continues to rise.

Navigating the Unknown

Talia’s medical journey has never been “textbook.” She is a complex little girl, and there have been many times when even the doctors didn’t have easy answers. Living in that space of uncertainty is one of the hardest things a parent can do. It has taught us to:

We have lived our lives scan by scan and surgery by surgery. It is a cycle of exhaustion and isolation that affects every part of a family, emotionally, mentally, and practically. There is a specific kind of heartbreak in watching your child suffer and knowing the only thing you can do is stand beside them and hold their hand.

The People Who Make the Difference

When you spend your life in and out of wards, the people around you become your lifeline. We have been incredibly lucky to have a neurosurgery team that feels more like a support system.

Specialists like Mr. Mano Shanmuganathan and Juraj Schwabb have been vital to Talia’s care. We owe so much to Alison Crawford, our neurosurgery specialist nurse, who has gone above and beyond time and time again; her kindness has meant more than words can say. Even the behind-the-scenes support from Bronagh, the neurosurgery secretary, has shown us how much this team genuinely cares.

We also found a sanctuary in Little Heroes. When you are submerged in hospital life, it’s the “little things” that keep you afloat. Whether it’s practical help or the comfort of being understood by people who truly “get it,” that support has been our anchor.

A Message to Other Families

Looking back, this journey has changed us. It has revealed Talia’s incredible strength and the resilience we were forced to build. But more than anything, it has shown us the power of compassion.

To any family walking a similar path, please know this, you are not alone. Trust your gut, take it one day at a time, and lean on the support available to you. It is a hard road, but with the right people beside you, it is a road you can navigate.

Talia is a fighter, a music-lover, and a joy-bringer. By sharing her story, we hope to offer a hand to the next family starting their journey, ensuring they know they don’t have to face it on their own.
